You get a fixed price that covers the excavation, spoil removal and cleanup, so there's one number and no drip-fed extras. Access, ground type and spoil are worked out before the machine arrives, which is what keeps a dig on schedule. And if the honest answer is that a job is smaller or simpler than you expected, you'll be told that too.

It depends on volume, access, ground type and whether rock or spoil removal is involved. As a rough guide, an excavator and operator run around $95 to $150 per hour, or more with a tip truck for spoil, and volume-based work is often priced around $50 to $150 per cubic metre. Small, straightforward residential jobs commonly land between roughly $1,500 and $5,000, while pool digs, basements and rock excavation run higher. Larger commercial and civil earthworks are usually priced per cubic metre and can run from tens of thousands upward depending on scale.
